ABSTRACT:
The present research work was an attempt to formulate and evaluate gastro retentive tablets of Diltiazem Hydrochloride in the form of tablets using polymers like HPMC K100M, Sodium CMC, MCC, Magnisum Sterate and talc. Diltiazem Hydrochloride an antihypertensive drug, with an oral bioavailability 40%, short half-life (3-4.5 hr) and largely present in unionized form in acidic pH, have been designed to increase gastric residence time and therapeutic efficacy. This can be achieved by fabricating expandable gastro retentive tablets which retain in stomach for prolonged time to release the drug. The tablets were formulated by direct compression method. The most convenient and commonly used route of drug delivery has historically been by oral ingestion. Drugs that are easily absorbed from the GIT and having a short half-life are eliminated quickly from the blood circulation.
